"Hackers
are a class, but an abstract class,
a class as yet to hack itself into manifest existence
as itself."
- McKenzie Wark "The Hacker Manifesto"
The
rapid spread of information technologies in past years
exposed new types of creative intervention in the “networked
culture” where art and communication merge. Hackers,
crackers, freaks, pirates and net-based artists have
emerged from the underground computer world to expose
their elicit programming secrets and activities which
spread both fear and fascination. Our perception of hacking
has been since prejudiced by mainstream culture and currently
hacking has mostly negative connotations, however, if
we examine the process itself we will soon enough recognize
that the act of hacking is the most effective demonstration
of virtuosity, which embodies a powerful mix of internet
creative solutions, direct social intervention, dynamic
skills and information dissemination.
Hackers, a side effect of “networked culture” can to some extend
be
addressed
as
an innovative form of expression, a new breed of artists with strong critical
discourse and creativity.
-
Is the act of hacking an evil and mean act?
- What are the aesthetics of hacking?
- Is every bit a work of art?
The "Unauthorized
Access" exhibition/event aims to develop
an open audio-visual dialogue between the “networked
medium” artists
and the viewer in order to answer to some of these questions.
Participating programmers, ethical/hackers and net artists
invited to the Hermitage Museum exhibition often engage
their audience directly, avoiding the display of their “artwork” in
an institutional setting—this will be a first time
for some of them to present their binary masterworks
in St. Petersburg’s venue.
During the exhibition, artists, programmers, hacktivists
and internationally recognized net art experts will present
their projects based on media performance and programming
modifications. The invited projects will bring together
different aspects of functionality: live hacking performance,
server security penetration, communication and net art
presentation in collaboration with local artists based
on venue location, and online and offline public interactivity.
And it is exactly as the interface of these areas where
a new scene of ‘network culture’ and public
is emerging.
